Sophie Cunningham, Empty Basket, 2020

Sophie Cunningham is an artist based in London. Prior to lockdown, her series Shopping Sculptures was created ordering fast-fashion products and turning them into sculptures that existed for a short duration, before they were dismantled and returned to the retailer.

Whilst confined to her house during the pandemic, she has created a correlating artwork in the form of an online shop titled Empty Basket. In the margins between product and art, the work embodies the structures and systems of consumer culture. Now unobtainable ‘Shopping Sculptures’ are rendered as out-of-stock’ product images, creating a dialogue about the way we access, view and treat art.
