Ariel Dong, Experimental Documentary of my Granduncle, 2020s

Ariel Dong is an artist based between the US and Singapore, working predominantly in a collaborative manner. Experimental Documentary of my Granduncle is a remote collaboration between the artist and her relatives in China. Relinquishing artistic control over the filming and editing to her Grandaunt, Ariel Dong produces a work that documents the complex working of memory and how it becomes embedded in the processes we use to recall and retell.

A nostalgic reflection on souvenirs from previous travels feels more poignant than normal as the world is suddenly required to stay put, and we don't know when we can become travellers again. The distances between us and loved ones abroad suddenly feel much greater, despite the communication technology available to us.
